The Bioparc Zoo of Doué

Situated in 2 km from the town, the zoo opened its doors to the public on Bastille Day,(14th of July), 1961, during the Journées de la rose and has become a tourist attraction in the Anjou Region. Each year, 220,000 visitors visit the park where over five hundred animals live.

The animals are housed in an environment recreating as much as possible their natural habitat according to three essential ingredients: space, vegetation and water. You will find a canyon for the leopards, a monkey island, etc. The site is a paradise for photography buffs who wish to photograph animals in their natural setting. Lookouts are provided in several areas. During your visit, you might be able to see the feeding of the giraffe, penguins, and even, if you dare, the feeding of the vultures.

The natural beauty of the park is not only due to the dedication of the staff, but to the quality of the national cave site. You can explore an underground gallery and a bit farther, you will find a rain forest alive with the sound of rare tropical birds. In the panoramic lift, you will discover an open-air quarry. Along the way, the canopy of the forest provides food and shelter for the animals. Identification of the various rare plants will satisfy the curiosity of the budding botanists.

The zoo is in partnership with the League of the Protection of Birds (LPO) and with the association of European Park Zoology and has a program for endangered species to assure their long-term survival.

In 2008 the park is opened from February 10th till November 01st (schedules of opening winter-automn - 10:00 am till 6:30 pm spring-summer - 9:00 am till 7:00 pm)
