The troglodythes

Doué la Fontaine is built on fossil rock, a cliff coquillière allowing an easy extraction of stony blocks. The city was an important producer of this material of construction and it results from it of numerous cave dwellings called troglodythes.

Historically, cave dwellings have been used as hiding places during wars, places of worship and stables for farm animals, as well as pigs and chickens. As the family grew and more rooms were needed, they dug antoher room to have larger living quarters.

A stair was arranged, allowing to reach the main yard dug in the ground and around which were created rooms in the style of alcôves. The main room served as dining room, as kitchen and as bedroom. During the birth of a child, one dug farther in the cliff to make a second room. Other niches of the yard allowed to shelter the chicken run, the pigs, tools and were of use according to their shape of silo to wheat.

Two of these cave dwellings leave been entirely restored and allows you to have a glimpse in the daily life in the 19th century and it proves that cave dwellings can be adjusted to our modern way of life.
