Early on, men discovered that this stone was easy to extract and was used for building houses. The perreyeurs made a rectilinear bleeding surfaces some then cut blocks. They went down gradually while sparing a vault making it possible to produce more stones while preserving solidity of the ground on the surface. When this part of basement had been sufficiently exploited, often on the level of the ground water, they closed again the furrow using blocks of stone laid out with the manner of a keystone what authorized the continuation of the culture. Another part of the field was then exploited same manner. In basement the cellars were connected between them allowing a double access.
These vaulted ceilings created underground cathedrals of approximately 18 meters and more in height. The discovery
of such "cathedral style" caves started in the 1980's. Accessible surface extends on more than 4 hectares, totality representing more than 5 square kilometers.
Sections of the caves were turned into an troglodythes center and are used for educational and professional seminars.
In another area, you can visit and watch a light-show promoting the beauty and the magic of the cellars.
During summer, "le Centre des Perrières" organizes night-visits with the light of lamps with carbide, adding mysterious at this place.
