Castle of Brézé

It is not widely known that on the ancient route between Loudin and Saumur,
some 15 kms from Doué la Fontaine, lies the historic castle of Brézé. The history of the site has remained unknown with regard to its origins for nunerous alterations have left little trace of its original form.

Traces of a castle dated from the 11th century have been found on this hill overlooking Breve. lterations and conversions from the 15th, 16th, and 19th century are evident. However the site has two features of particular interest. The castle is surrounded by a dry Moat some 18 metres deep and in the moat face under the castle is found an impressive system of tunnels and Galleries.

The visit thus takes place in 2 parts. The part in surface contains the Richelieu's bedroom, the ancient apartments of the bishop, the classified neogothic style furniture, as well as the big gallery being of use to the receptions of time. It's the first floor that we reach in the second half of the castle: underground passages.

It's the most ancient part where we find vestiges of the former constructions. Several hundreds of metres of visit in basement show you how the people of time conceived a life hidden from the surface, allowing at the same moment to meet their need in food and to defend itself from enemy attacks. Numerous traps and craftiness were reserved for the unwanted guests.

It's a site to be visited which will delight as well the art lovers as those fascinated by the subterranean world.
